Fungus infections can make your toenails appear discolored, usually yellow or brown rather than black. A Nail Recipe from Dimitri James

Try this hot bath for splitting nails from the book "Becoming Beauty" by Dimitri James:

2 ½ cups water
8 tablespoons dried horsetail stems
Soak stems in water overnight. Heat mixture to a boil and reduce to a slow simmer for 30 minutes. Store mixture in refrigerator and warm in microwave to soak your nails for 15 minutes every two days.

Follow with an application of a cuticle softener.
